Oakalla Prison was in operation from 1912 and was both a maximum security prison with capital punishment, and a prison farm with the reputation for the easiest prison to escape from in Canada. When the prison closed in 1991 the museum received many objects, including this inmate-crafted tattoo gun. Prison tattoos have a fascinating history of symbolism and hidden meanings, indicating everything from body counts to association with gangs.
