Constable Larry Esau worked for one year with the RCMP before quitting and joining the Vancouver PD in 1963.
On June 29th, 1966 Constable Larry Esau was on duty. He was riding his red 1965 Harley Davidson Vancouver Police motorcycle, eastbound along East Hastings Street. He had just graduated from a Vancouver Police motorcycle-training course a few months before in April. His instructor described him as the best in his class.
As he approached Woodland Drive a vehicle suddenly pulled out into his lane on Hastings Street. He was unable to stop in time and struck the vehicle. He was thrown 64 feet and suffered serious injuries. He died six hours later at Vancouver General Hospital.
